On Wednesday, Nov. 13, state police investigators located and arrested Catlett resident Dennis Dunning, 54, who was found at his home in the 8000 block of Burwell Road in Fauquier, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Late in the afternoon on Friday, Nov. 8, police say that 73-year-old Garland Heddings was walking along Elk Road to a mailbox when he was struck by an SUV that was heading north, then by a second vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Neither Dunning, nor the other driver stopped after the crash.

Following his arrest, Dunning was charged with:

  • Felony hit-and-run;
  • Involuntary manslaughter;
  • Operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock.

He is being held at the Fauquier Adult Detention Center without bond.

The second driver remains at large.
